By Firefighter/EMT Corey Milewski
March 15, 2014

At approximately 12:45 PM on March 15, Hampstead was dispatched for a first-due house fire on Boerner Road, off of Route 482. As Engine 23 called en route, they received were advised that the homeowner was burning a large brush pile that then spread to his house. E23 arrived at Route 482 and Boerner Road and started down the long muddy driveway. About half way down the driveway, E23 started to lay the 5 inch supply line. Westminster completed the water supply line by doing a reverse lay from the dropped end of E23’s 5 inch hose to the beginning of the driveway. E23 also found that they had a large brush fire in the surrounding field and around the house which required more units. Upon arrival at the house, the crew from E23 pulled an attack line and went inside. The crew managed to partly knock down the fire on the first floor before they ran out of water. Evacuation tones were sounded to vacate the building due to lack of water. Once a water source was established and more crews had arrived on scene, a second hand line was pulled to be advanced through the basement. The fire was then quickly contained and was soon placed under control. The homeowner was transported to the burn center with second degree burns. Extensive overhaul was required to make sure there was no fire extension. Thank you to all the crews that were there.

While crews were operating on the house fire, Station 2 was alerted for another call for a shed fire on England Drive in Hampstead. Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company Engine 413, filling in Hampstead, responded. Upon arrival they found an approximately 20' by 20' shed on fire along with extension to the cornfield and brush behind the shed. That fire was also quickly extinguished by crews from Reisterstown, Manchester, Pleasant Hill, and Hereford. The fire was reported to have started in a barrel and spread to the shed and field.
