This is a reminder that there is an open burn ban in effect from June 1st - Aug 31st in Carroll County. Open burning permits cannot be used between June 1 and August 31st.

The annual burn ban extends throughout the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Region and is designed to reduce the high ozone levels and improve air quality during the summer months. The annual burn ban is required by Maryland State Air Quality regulations and first went into effect in June 1995. Burning bans during dry conditions may also be imposed by the Maryland Forest Service at other times.

In months when the burn ban is not in effect, county residents must obtain an open burning permit from the Health Department prior to any open burning. Burning of household trash or household rubbish is not allowed at any time of the year.

For more information on burn permits and how to obtain a permit after the ban is over, visit the Health Department’s website at https://cchd.maryland.gov/environmental-health-air-pollution/
